However, the molecular tests essential to the diagnosis of tumors like ELOC-mutated renal cell carcinoma are not readily widely available for use in diagnostic practice for most pathologists, of most pathologists or it might be expensive. Therefore, there is a need for the development of additional inexpensive diagnostic ancillary tests with quick turnaround time. The use of GPNMB immunohistochemical stain described in this timely article might provide diagnostic utility in the diagnosis of RCCFMS with TSC1/2/mTOR alterations. However, the study is limited by a low number of cases and GPNMB antibody is not yet widely available in the most diagnostic laboratories. Given the potential utility of GPNMB expression in other renal tumors, such as MiT family translocation RCCs, eosinophilic solid and cystic RCC, and low-grade oncocytic tumors, the awareness of the findings of this study can provide more rationale for introducing GPNMB antibody in the test menu of the immunohistochemistry laboratories.
Reviewer: Oleksandr Kravtsov, MD

The author responds (Dr. Andres Matoso):

We agree with the summary.

Positive GPNMB Immunostaining Differentiates Renal Cell Carcinoma With Fibromyomatous Stroma Associated With TSC1/2/MTOR Alterations From Others.
